ABSTRACT

The maritime industry is characterized as high risk. A maritime accident may have catastrophic consequences for us and our society. Systematic safety management began in the early twentieth century and other high-risk industries such as nuclear and aviation have been the subjects of extensive research and are often used as references in safety management literature. All contributing authors to this book work within the maritime industry in a combination of areas: seafaring, lecturing, training and research. We all identified a need for an academic book on safety management addressing the maritime industry in particular. The characteristics of the maritime industry, sailing the seven seas away from modern society, emergency services and rescue personnel, means that the challenges the maritime industry faces are different. Thus, based on these needs, we have brought together a group of maritime experts to fill the gap in safety literature. We invite the reader to browse or read cover to cover depending on your interests. To assist in your reading, we provide a glimpse into the chapters below.
