ABSTRACT
Design plays an important role in the maritime industry and is vital to the construction of ships, maritime equipment, management systems, as well as rules and regulations. Back in the great days of sail, vessels were designed and built on the basis of practical experience; ship construction was predominantly a skill. The advance of science and technology changed ship design into a complicated combination of art and science, delivering a dramatic increase in the size, speed and technical complexity of ships.
