ABSTRACT

Ms Jones is the director of the recently opened State Science Museum. She sits in her modern office glancing down at the lines of people streaming into the gleaming new structure. She is proud of the museum and very gratified by the warm reception it is receiving from both the public and the press. Her phone rings. It is the public-affairs officer explaining there is a crisis on the main floor. A visitor in a wheelchair is insisting that he be allowed to go up the escalator in his wheelchair, a maneuver he claims he has done many times before. The head of the guard force is insisting that he use the elevator provided primarily to accommodate individuals with disabilities. The visitor has brought with him members of the press, who are busily taking pictures of the confrontation. Even the usually calm public-affairs officer sounds flustered as he seeks the advice of the director. Should museum directors know something about using wheelchairs on escalators?
