What is the nature of the tourist experience? Is it a trivial, superficial, frivolous pur suit of vicarious, contrived experiences, a 'pseudo-event' as Boorstin (1964: 77-117) would have it, or is it an earnest quest for the authentic, the pilgrimage of modern man, as MacCannell (1973: 593) believes it to be?
