ABSTRACT

What practical value does hypnotherapy have for psychotherapists who have no formal training—or inclination to undertake formal training—in hypnosis? I believe certain hypnotherapeutic methods have considerable value and utility for clinicians whose primary identity and work is with insight-oriented psychotherapies. The plan of this paper is to describe five such hypnotherapy techniques and their value and application in the course of ongoing psychotherapy. None of these methods require formal trance induction or deepening. All are easily learned and compatible with the therapeutic style of a clinician who believes that treatment should be respectful, cooperative, and a collaborative relationship with a client or patient (Adler, 1956; Barber, 1985).
