ABSTRACT

General conditions in South Australia during 1981 could have been better. In March and September the national unemployment rate of those seeking full-time work was 5.8%, as estimated by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. In both these months, South Australia’s rate was the highest of all states and had deteriorated from 7.7% to 8.5% in the six-month period. Similarly, population growth continued slowly. Departures from the state exceeded arrivals from mid 1978 to the last available figures showing conditions at the end of 1980.
