ABSTRACT
Chapter 13 covered aspects of the extraordinary legacy of the Victorian and Edwardian housebuilders, which has allowed their terrace housing and purpose-built flats to be so successfully adapted and converted for present-day lifestyles. But this legacy was very much an accident. The emphasis here is on current different forms of construction, some of which promise to be just as adaptable, and more scientifically engineered than their historic predecessors.
