ABSTRACT

In 1970 the German Football Association (DFB) allowed girls and women to play soccer as members of and within the leagues of their association. At that time, nearly 75000 girls and women were already organized in 1100 club teams (Ratzeburg, 1983). In 1984, 13 years later, there were more than 437 000 females engaged in soccer in more than 3400 teams. There are no other sports for women in which figures of club membership have increased so rapidly during the last decade in Germany. Although thousands of girls and women were playing, there were only 102 licensed female soccer coaches in 1984 (N = 100 License B, N = 2 License A). They are the subject of the present investigation.
