ABSTRACT

No single topic addressed by the various papers in the proceedings of this conference will guarantee success for the footballer or for any other competitive athlete or coach. The purpose of this paper is to present the football practitioner with the results of nutrition studies which, if properly applied, should enhance the potential for players to perform at their physical optimum. The majority of the discussion will centre around the consumption of carbohydrate since it is the only macronutrient the availability of which has been shown to be associated with enhanced or impaired exercise performance.
