ABSTRACT

The importance of a powerful and technically correct kicking action in free kicks and penalties is obvious. The relationship between these factors and the ability to create or score goals is clear. Unfortunately there has been no similar tradition of technical analysis into throw-in techniques. Until the early 1960s, players only used the short throw-in. From that period there occurred an additional interest in the role of the long throw-in to open space down the wing or directly to the front post in order to create scoring opportunities (Batty, 1980).
