ABSTRACT
This paper examines the retain and transfer system in professional soccer as operated in the Football League in England and Wales. A pluralist perspective is adopted to recognise the distinct and possibly conflicting objectives and strategies of the principal actors, namely the Football League, the soccer club and the soccer player.
