The notion of risk has become a deeply embedded concern of many Western societies. It is commonly discussed in relation to countless aspects of social life on international, local and individual levels. References to risk are found in relation to:

pollution and the environment
industrial or workplace hazards and safety
food safety and hygiene
financial and economic matters, including personal investments, insurance policies and mortgages, as well as national and international economic relations
personal safety and security in private and public spaces
policing, crime, crime policy, victimisation and prisons.
