ABSTRACT
The article is organised as follows: the next sections deal with the role of states as
builders of regions and delve into the diverse world of region-building processes
across the world. Then the final sections draw some lessons for the discipline of
comparative regionalism in a changing world and identify new research agendas for
the future.
