ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book is about the crying need for comprehensive and radical reform of the United Nations development system (UNDS) and of the individual organizations within it. It reviews the reasons for change, followed by a list of recommendations. The recommendations aim at the first five years of the post-2015 era. The world organization was founded on principles of multilateral cooperation. With globalization has come international convergence but accompanied by exacerbated income inequalities within countries. In conflict-prone and otherwise fragile states, the UN has the capacity to support peacebuilding, all under the sole authority of the secretary-general. With consolidation would come the opportunity for stronger advocacy by the UN across a range of policies. Its positions on gender equality, income equality, human rights, international economic justice, environmental management, and other areas based on original research inspired by UN ideals.
