ABSTRACT
The articled teacher course on which this discussion is based was a two-year school-based postgraduate course for intending primary school teachers. Fourteen students were recruited in 1990 and placed in 12 schools in two LEAs; a further 12 students were recruited in 1991 and placed in 12 different schools in the same LEAs. The articled teachers spent four days each week in school, and one day each week in college. Apart from two six-week placements in other schools, the articled teacher was based in the same school for two years. Headteachers were asked to select a teacher to act as mentor to each articled teacher. A payment of £500 was made to the mentor each year and half a day supply cover provided each week to enable the mentor to organize and support the training of the articled teacher within the school.
