ABSTRACT

A confident and competent grasp of English both spoken and written is one of the main aims of primary education. Children need to achieve a basic competency in English to enjoy their entitlement to all other subjects in the primary curriculum. Schools are most often judged by the standards of literacy of their pupils. Parents, especially in the earliest years of schooling, judge their child’s progress in school by how well they are able to read. In the longer term, an enjoyment of language in both the spoken and written forms is a means of pleasure and relaxation both in school and for life. This is why I believe coordinating English is the most important coordinating role in the primary school.
