ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the use of online tools by victims of terrorism and victims networks. It explores how victims of terrorism, and those claiming to represent them, have made use of online tools in the Spanish and United Kingdom (UK) contexts. These online tools are defined broadly as the different means that the internet offers to present the views of organisations or individual victims or to facilitate social interactions among communities of victims or wider communities associated with organisations claiming to represent victims. They include websites, social networks and different services such as video hosting, blogging and online forums. The online content selected for analysis was the official content of organisations claiming to represent victims of terrorism, or for the specific purpose of commemorating them. The website is the common online tool favoured by victims of terrorism organisations. Spanish websites include a section explaining the nature of the organisation, its history, organisational model and objectives.
