ABSTRACT

As educational researchers and program evaluators, we are interested in improving instructional practice. In this chapter I will present an argument that naturalistic enquiry has been a neglected element in facilitating change and improvement in practice. In Brazil, as around the world, there is great desire to improve education, but also a reluctance to use our national treasuries for doing so. We need make the most of our research effort. And we need to realize the special need for an evolutionary style of correction, avoiding the implantation of devices and techniques into systems which cannot adapt to them.
