ABSTRACT

In 1996, the mayor of the City of San Jose and the President of San Jose State University met for breakfast to discuss how they might strengthen relationships between the City and the University, which is located in downtown San Jose, California. The next day the newspapers and media announced that the mayor and president had agreed upon a combined City/University library as the beginning of building a stronger relationship between “town and gown.” Seven years later, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library opened its doors to the public and university community on August 1, 2003.
