ABSTRACT

Strategies for facilitating racial identity development vary, but regardless of whether the intervention involves one client in, say, the context of psychotherapy, or several clients in the context of a training group, a common set of strategies can be identified in the promotion of this development. This chapter describes some of the strategies used when intervening with clients to facilitate racial identity development. The general term intervention is used in the chapter to refer broadly to such professional activities as individual and group counseling, psychotherapy, and supervision, as well as group training and organizational/institutional consultation. The term”client” is used to refer to any person or persons who take part in the services provided by mental health professionals, including supervisees who are involved in counseling or clinical supervisory relationships. “Practitioner” is used to refer to the professional who employs the interventions.
