ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to describe substance use and abuse from a clinical, theoretical perspective elaborated from stress-coping theory (SCT) (Shiftman & Wills, 1985; Wills, 1990; Monti, Abrams, Kadden & Cooney, 1989), the social ecological “life contextual process” model of Rudolph Moos and colleagues (Moos & Finney, 1983; Moos, 1984, 1988), and cognitive constructivist, systemic theory (Brown, 1985, 1987, 1991; Steinglass, 1987).
