ABSTRACT

Many psychotherapists and other practitioners are coming to realize the importance of the participation of addicts in self-help groups as they begin to address the problems attendant on chemical abuse and addiction. Although psychotherapists have been addressing the problems of addiction in therapy for years, only recently have there been any systematic attempts by theoretical practitioners to integrate the influence of the self-help systems into psychodynamic thought (Dodes, 1988; Levinson, 1985).
