ABSTRACT

While authors argue that intensive outpatient rehabilitation treatment (Chapter 3) or comprehensive and intensive outpatient treatment (Rawson, 1990) can effectively meet the treatment needs of a majority of chemically dependent clients, the question remains as to for whom and under what conditions an inpatient stay remains appropriate. This chapter will attempt to answer this question by drawing primarily on the authors experiences in working with severely dependent crack cocaine patients in Interfaith Medical Centers inpatient detoxification units.
