ABSTRACT

Bill and Alice had been fighting. Alice did most of the yelling; Bill clammed up, telling Alice she needed to get her head examined. When she cried, he told her she was too emotional and asked too much of him. Then he left and went to work in his large corner CEO office, where he spent most of his time. Alice cried for hours, wondering if she should go into the kitchen, pull out a knife, and end her misery. That would teach him! Finally, after many phone calls to friends, family, and pastors, she calmed down, made Bill's dinner, and apologized to him when he returned home. This same scene has been replayed between Bill and Alice about once a month throughout the 20 years of their marriage.
