ABSTRACT

Sigmund Freud presented a lecture on “The Aetiology of Hysteria” to the Society of Psychiatry and Neurology in Vienna on April 21, 1896. In a few people a recollection of their favorite fairy tales takes the place of memories of their own childhood; they have made the fairy tales into screen memories. After publication of the initial edition of “The Interpretation of Dreams,” Freud turned more and more to the links between different psychic and cultural productions. Andreas’ fairy tale provides the modern reader with a generic profile of 19th-century perceptions about the nature of dreaming and dreams. Freud respected fairy tales as a genre for portraying the fantasy realms of a culture. He recognized that fairy tales often cast a mysterious spell whose remarkable power is retained long beyond the first two decades of life.
