ABSTRACT

Remarried couples in which the husband has children from a previous marriage and the wife is in her first marriage are generally considered stepfamilies only if one of the children makes his or her primary residence in the couple’s home. Most research and writing on stepfamilies excludes stepmother-only families because there are far fewer custodial fathers than residential mothers. Stepfamilies in which both adults have children from previous marriages are studied more frequently (Hetherington and Jodl, 1994; Bray and Kelly, 1998).
