“I emphasize … my belief … that ethology will prove a fruitful approach to psychoanalytic problems…. [My] reason for preferring it to other approaches is the research which it suggests. With ethological concepts and methods it is possible to undertake a far-reaching programme of experimentation into the social responses of the preverbal period of infancy, and to this I attach much importance.”
