ABSTRACT

CD is a theory of how to represent sentences with respect to the information that they convey about events and states of the world. Traditional linguistic theories have limited their scope to considering sentences out of context. However, any reasonable theory of the representation of events and the sentences describing those events must consider those sentences within a context. Two questions arise when we consider the nature of a theory of context:

How do sentences connect together?

What kinds of knowledge do people have that enable them to discover a context in which to put sentences (and events) together?
