ABSTRACT
As capture fisheries approach or exceed capacity, aquaculture has become one of the fastest growing food production sectors worldwide (FAO, 2012). In the past three decades (1980–2010), world food fish production of aquaculture has expanded by almost 12 times, at an average annual rate of 8.8 per cent (FAO, 2012, pp 24, 25). World aquaculture production attained an all-time high in 2010 at 60 million tonnes with an estimated total value of US$119 billion. As global population grows and per capita consumption of fish increases, aquaculture production should continue to grow (FAO, 2010; Tacon and Metian, 2010).
