ABSTRACT

The number of technologies that support data analytics and data-driven decisions are growing. However, it makes stakeholders and the public wonder if ethics are a factor in decision making, and if decisions are made with or without regard to consequences. Purposefully planning and integrating ethical practices and policies in educational data mining and analytics projects ensure decisions are made in the best interest of students and the educational institution. This chapter considers four themes of ethics (privacy, security, ownership, and evidence-based decision making) and how they apply to responsible data-driven decision making in education. It also provides a discussion of how data analytics affects the education industry, including challenges and success stories related to educational analytics.
