ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews research to provide an overview of the evolution of the historical and theoretical perspectives of data analytics and data mining in education. To be able to capture the effects of data in educational research, key events and key works are examined by incorporating a timeline with a focus on educational data mining (EDM) and learning analytics (LA) as interconnected research domains. The theoretical discussions within the field are examined, building on the evolution of the field, which is presented under the five stages while raising questions about the future of the data-driven educational research.
