ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces discourse analytics as a methodology to illuminate the study of learning advances in online discussion forums. The chapter provides a brief history of online education, and the development of the Collaborativist theory of learning and of discourse analytics as a research methodology that locates human learning and knowledge building in processes of discourse. Discourse analysis makes learning visible to both student and teacher and fosters awareness of the learning process.
