ABSTRACT

During a trainee’s internship experience, a red flag or clinical issue may arise. In these instances, the trainee needs the awareness to identify the red flag, the confidence to assess the issue, and the support to handle a potential referral. This chapter identifies and discusses the keys to making this a successful experience for both the trainee and the client, including the vital role the supervisor-supervisee relationship plays in providing a safe, supportive, and quality learning experience during the referral process. This chapter also discusses best practices for making referrals.
