ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how research on social networks and technology in organizations has coevolved over recent decades. We begin with a brief introduction to the key concepts and interests that have traditionally driven researchers’ inquiry in each these areas. Next, we review recent literature to show how advances in each area of study have influenced the other. An image of a sociotechnical landscape emerges where our understanding of human social structure has become inseparable from the study of information and communication technologies (ICTs). We close by considering how recognizing this duality might influence future research.
