ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of how this edited volume comes together. The chapter first outlines the relationships between English as a lingua franca (ELF), the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Indonesia. Second, the chapter discusses the motivations underlying the development of this edited volume as relevant to teacher education for ELF in the Indonesian context. The chapter then discusses the conception of ELF employed in the volume to highlight its use as a unifying terminology that accounts for the pluricentricity of the English language. Next, the chapter highlights the need to move towards teacher education for ELF in order to assist local Indonesian teachers to teach English in lingua franca contexts. Finally, the chapter outlines the breadth of the chapters in the edited volume.
