ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the development of intercultural communicative competence (ICC) among English pre-service teachers in Indonesia by conducting a study on the outline/profile of culture-related courses in English education programs of ten teacher education institutions in the country. ICC plays a more pivotal role amidst the increasing globalization and ASEAN Integration, which allow and necessitate the wide use of English as a lingua franca. English pre-service teachers are thus expected to develop ICC as well as the needed skills and strategies to facilitate the development of competence among their future students. The findings reveal, however, that all the study programs orient their culture-related courses to the need for developing their pre-service teachers’ understanding of English culture to help facilitate their process in learning English, but not yet in teaching English. The course documents analyzed also indicate a focus on learning the cultures of English-speaking countries. Implications of the findings for teacher education institutions are discussed in the chapter, with a main recommendation for the institutions to embrace ELF concepts and approaches in facilitating the development of pre-service teachers’ ICC in order to enable them to become ELF-aware both as English learners and users, and as prospective English teachers.
