ABSTRACT

The working conditions in Icelandic preschools are the subject of this chapter. It is inspired by the lively conversation on social media about the working conditions, especially after OECD report “Starting Strong V” came into the public eye. The Icelandic preschool system has been struggling since the financial crisis in 2008. As a consequence preschools were merged with other preschools; to among other cut down on administrative costs, making the preschools larger, letting off some of the staff such as head teachers, and those responsible for special education. Now it appears that Iceland has moved beyond the financial crisis. The country is again flourishing economically, but the preschools are still struggling. Reports and research indicate stress, burn out and an unstable workforce in preschools.
