ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the work of analysing research on multimodal classrooms by projecting into the future to imagine the possibilities of a pedagogy of multiliteracies for young children. It identifies projects that could help develop the pedagogy of multiliteracies, the lack of pedagogical practices that could be emphasized due to the rapidly changing media and learning environments for young children. The chapter describes a systematic review of research articles that deal with the pedagogy of multiliteracies in primary classrooms. Rapid societal and technological changes worldwide have challenged educators to reconceptualize pedagogy in early childhood education, in primary settings. The pedagogy of multiliteracies brings together traditionally separate research strands related to the educational field, such as media education, digital learning, studies on language instruction, and literacy studies on reading and writing, and design and arts. The Common Core State Standards in the United States focus on students’ use of technology and digital media to access information and communicate knowledge.
