ABSTRACT

Self-disclosure of sexual orientation, when asked directly by a client in therapy, is a complex topic that therapists rarely receive formalized training and supervision on. The aim of this chapter is to identify the unique challenges gay male therapists face when making determinations on whether to disclose their sexual orientation to a client. Five case studies will be provided along with a discussion of self-disclosure in each context. The implications outlined in the discussion will align with the research presented in the prior research chapter on sexual orientation, though will extend into a more practice-focused direction. This chapter will not give clear-cut answers; however, the discussions facilitate a dialogue to assist trainees and therapists with their conceptualization and decision-making process. Lastly, there will be discussion of self-disclosure in contexts of other LGBTQ and gender non-conforming therapist identifies.
