ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses on the English subject leader's role. Consideration is given to how the post has evolved over time, mapping the evolution of subject leadership to the current day. The book discusses a range of key themes that are essential to both leadership and English: addressing the skills required for effective subject leadership whilst at the same time continually considering the specific implications for English. It brings together current research on English pedagogy, the requirements of the new National Curriculum and generic school leadership theory. The book examines the range of documentation used to shape whole-school actions and set priorities for English. It gives wider consideration to how effective subject leaders decide on the pedagogic approaches appropriate to their school's needs. The book considers how to adapt our curriculum to incorporate new technology and digital literacies.
