ABSTRACT
This chapter focuses on ways the English subject leader can monitor English teaching and learning. It discusses in more detail the practices of data analysis, book scrutiny, planning scrutiny, pupil interview and the learning walk. Monitoring ensures a school has a clear understanding of the quality of teaching and the progress in learning. It is a term encompassing activities that all teachers engage with such as marking, pupil progress meetings, testing, assessment of pupil work and moderation. It is important to understand that no single monitoring activity will provide complete information about the quality of teaching and learning in a school. Teaching is complex and each different monitoring activity aims to discover information about different parts of school life. Formal monitoring usually requires dedicated subject leadership time to enable the leader to be in other classrooms, observing the teaching and learning of English and talking to pupils across the school.
