ABSTRACT

The Multi-Perspective Insights (MPI) framework, is an intersection of multimodal, multi-method, and multi-stakeholder approaches. This framework integrates big and small data to describe students' learning processes. This chapter demonstrates how data shepherds have to navigate team roles and hierarchies to thoughtfully generate new knowledge and communicate findings. Data shepherds coordinate the varied perspectives and methods of data analysis. Along with the data themselves, these components of MPI can be thought of as the shepherd's flock. The chapter describes in more detail the ingredients that make up the MPI framework, and which, together, lead to new insights into teaching and learning. The Open Learning Initiative began in 2002, with the intent of developing courses that integrate cognitive tutoring and online resources with learning sciences research and communities of educators and institutions. Hewlett Foundation, the initiative grew to include numerous courses that were provided both to Carnegie Mellon students and to the Open Educational Resource community.
