ABSTRACT

The childrearing attitude of parents will tend to repeat itself again and again in a similar way to the parent's own upbringing as a child by his or her own parents. To a certain degree the children will also be treated in the same way in which the parent was treated formerly by his or her parents. There are many indications in the literature which point to the fact that transmission of parental characteristics is not an absolute, but a relative, transmission. Parents with the least authoritarian and restrictive grandparents appear to have the most egalitarian relationship with their children. The significant direct influence is an indication that educational level is an important variable in the transmission of parental functioning. The transmission, however, is not a rigid process. From a macro-level point of view it is repeatedly stated that generations are not fixed, unchangeable entities.
