ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the nature of negotiations between fathers and daughters over girls spatial autonomy during their adolescent years within the context of rapid social change in China. The research focuses on two particular aspects of girls spatial use of the home: going out and use of the internet. The chapter starts with introducing the context of Chinese intergenerational relationships in relation to the home and then examines girls and fathers respective understandings of parental authority in contemporary Chinese society and girls daily practices. In an effort to gain a comprehensive understanding of father-daughter relationships in the context, the research design includes both fathers and daughters. As the internet has become an essential part of young people's lives, it causes huge concern for the parents while there is the increasing presence of modern technologies within the home. However, with internet access at home, they are less able to limit their children's connections with the wider world.
