ABSTRACT

This chapter describes some design approaches for creating intergenerational indoor and outdoor environments that are conducive to healthy, active lifestyles for people of all ages. Its focus on environmental design interventions is in the context of facilitating intergenerational engagement in health promotion. Intergenerational design alludes to the challenge of designing physical environments that are conducive to intergenerational engagement and cooperation. There are various other ways to frame intergenerational health promotion programmes. In framing the orientation for exploring and creating intergenerational settings for healthy living, the chapter alludes to several intergenerational design principles based on traditional models of person-environment relationships, as articulated in the conceptual framework. It explores issues related to creating parks and playgrounds, streets and sidewalks, purpose-built age-integrated centres ('intergenerational shared site' facilities) and other community settings where the generations can readily meet, interact and work together to adopt healthier lifestyle behaviours.
