ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the lives of 18 young people with physical and sensory impairments in Bahir Dar, the capital of the Amhara region of Northern Ethiopia, over a period of 16 months. Stereotyped, derogatory terms and figurative expressions are commonly used in Amharic, the official language in Ethiopia, to directly address people with disabilities. Photovoice project requires a new framework and paradigm in which participants drive the analysis from the selection of their own photographs that they feel are most important or simply like best to the decoding or descriptive interpretation of images. Caroline Wang suggests a structured technique of photo selection and guided dialogue. The photovoice exhibition also creates a unique opportunity to bridge the gaps between research, community and public policy development. Recruiting research is important that the potential participants identify with and are passionate about the issue. They should be experiential participants, meaning that they have first-hand knowledge and experience about the issue they are to address.
