ABSTRACT

An understanding of ethics – which relates to the nature of our responsibilities – is central to all that we do in social and cultural anthropology. These responsibilities are complex and occur at every level of our research: from when we make decisions about where and with whom to research, to how we interact with the communities we find ourselves with, through to how we communicate and write about our findings. Beyond this we also need to consider our relationships with our colleagues, the discipline and the countries where we might end up. This chapter looks at these issues through a series of case studies, after which we pose a number of questions for you to discuss and with which you can think through the issues at stake as you enter into the process of being an anthropologist.
