Changing perspectives on traditional iron production in west Africa

For over a century, indigenous iron production in Africa has been the focus of considerable scholarship (see Cline 1937; Pearce 1969; Kense 1983c). The study of the iron industry has undergone several distinct phases — each reflecting specific interests on the part of the ethnographers and specialists concerned.
