ABSTRACT

There is great variability in terms of the age when people experience physical, psychological, or social limitations because of advancing age. One way to define old age would be as the time when poor health creates a major limitation on activity. In a I 981 US survey, half of all people aged 75 to 84 reported no such health limitations, and even in the over-85 group, one-third reported no limitations due to health, and another third reported only minor limitations. The other third, however, were unable to carry out any of their everyday activities (cited in Neugarten and Neugarten, 1987).
