‘Do People Actually Consent to Political Authority?'

In this extract, Jean Hampton spells out some of the problems with the notion of tacit consent, and with its contemporary rendering by John Rawls and others in terms of hypothetical consent. She suggests that this latter notion implies a ‘Platonic conception of political authority’. This is a reference to the theory contained in the Republic in which Plato advocates rule by specially moral and virtuous Philosopher Kings.
